ABOUT KYUJUTSU

Kyujutsu (弓術) is the traditional Japanese martial art of archery as practised by samurai and warriors throughout feudal Japan. It encompasses the combat-oriented techniques, tactics, and philosophy developed over centuries of battlefield experience. Kyujutsu emphasises functional archery skills in various combat scenarios, including mounted archery, rapid shooting, and practical accuracy under pressure.

KYUJUTSU VS KYUDO: KEY DIFFERENCES

While both arts involve the Japanese bow, kyujutsu and kyudo are fundamentally different disciplines:

Kyujutsu is a martial art focused on combat effectiveness and warrior training. It prioritises practical shooting skills, speed, and accuracy in tactical situations. The techniques are varied and adapted to different combat contexts (on foot, mounted, in formation). Kyujutsu practitioners train as warriors would have—preparing for real combat applications.

Kyudo (弓道), by contrast, is a modern martial way that emerged in the 20th century. It is centred on spiritual and personal development through the practice of archery. Kyudo emphasises precise form, meditative focus, and the philosophical journey of mastery. While it shares the same bow, kyudo is standardised, ritualistic, and pursued as a path to self-cultivation rather than combat readiness.

In essence: kyujutsu is martial combat archery; kyudo is the spiritual way of archery.
