Bring Medieval History to Life
We work with primary and secondary schools, home-education groups, universities, museums and heritage sites across the South East to deliver lively, accurate sessions on medieval combat and the people who practised it.
Everything we teach comes from surviving fight manuals and period sources – not stage fighting. Sessions can be tailored to your curriculum, exhibition or event theme, and cover the medieval period in both Europe and Japan.
Talks and handling sessions
I bring along a collection of medieval weaponry – affectionately known as The Table of Carnage – and talk through:
- How to become a knight
- How these weapons were actually used in combat
- The fight books – the medieval manuals that recorded the techniques
- Self-defence in the medieval period
Everyone gets the chance to (safely) handle the weapons, and the session finishes with a Q&A. Many of the pieces are the kind you would normally only see behind glass in a museum, which makes it a memorable, hands-on experience.
Duration: flexible, to fit your timetable or event programme.
Suitable for: all ages.
Sword workshops (up to 15 people)
A hands-on introduction to medieval swordsmanship, similar to one of our beginners’ classes. The content can be tailored to your group – just let us know what you have in mind.
- Duration: around 90 minutes, including a Q&A
- Age: 13 and over, due to the weight of the swords
- What to wear: no special clothing, just closed-toe shoes
- Safety: a no-contact session, so no protective gear is needed

About your instructor
I’m Jason Hulott, Chief Instructor at Canterbury Medieval Combat and Nishimon Dojo. I have been teaching medieval weapon-based arts for 25 years, starting with Japanese Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu, and for the last ten years I have taught European medieval combat, primarily following the German tradition.
We are fully insured for workshops and training.
