Chinese Historical Knife Throwing

A New Monthly Session

The Real technique, not trick shots.

Canterbury Medieval Combat is launching a new monthly Chinese Historical Knife Throwing session — open to the public, and open to anyone curious about a tradition you won’t find taught properly anywhere else in East Kent.

This sits alongside our existing HEMA and longsword training as part of the same approach we’ve always taken: faithful to the historical technique, taught with proper grounding, not staged for spectacle.

What to Expect

Each session runs as a proper introduction to the discipline, not a one-off novelty afternoon. You’ll be taught grip, stance, throwing mechanics, and range safety from the ground up, alongside the historical context behind the techniques — grounded in traditional Chinese throwing knife and dart styles (Feijian), rather than the trick-shot content that dominates most knife throwing videos online.

Sessions are organised around the specific weapon style being thrown that month, so training stays focused and progressive rather than a scattergun introduction to everything at once.

Session Details

Once a month

All equipment provided for your first session — no need to own throwing knives to come along

Suitable for complete beginners — no prior martial arts or throwing experience needed

Part of Something Bigger

Canterbury Medieval Combat is a participating club in the Sword Tribe Throwing League, a national programme for clubs and instructors teaching historically grounded Asian knife throwing. Through this, our members train to a recognised standard, get access to historically accurate throwing knives at a member discount direct from Sword Tribe, and can take part in league competition alongside other clubs across the UK.

For those who want to go further, advanced workshops are also available combining knife throwing with sword-drawing technique from both the Japanese and Chinese traditions — a natural next step once you’ve got the fundamentals down.

Who It’s For

Everyone’s welcome — whether you’re already training with us in longsword or HEMA and want to add a new weapon system, or you’ve never picked up a blade in your life and just fancy trying something different. As always: all equipment provided, no experience necessary, friendly faces guaranteed.
